Our Current Undertakings

Reaching the women in markets

Through a collaboration with the Institute of Social Transformation (IST) we have mapped and established direct links with 12 market women associations in the districts of Kampala, Iganga, Gulu and Busia, with a total membership of 1,350 women of reproductive age. IHB is targeting women in these groups with SRHR information and services, including birth control services, safe abortion and post abortion care, screening and management for STI, including HIV/AIDS, screening and management of reproductive cancers, among others. We are targeting these groups with self-care innovations for short-term birth control methods including DPMA-SC self-injections and medical abortion self-care.

Linking University youth to SRHR

Established collaborations with 8 university chapters of MSFC including Makerere University, Mbarara University, Busitema University, Kampala International University, Kabale University, Uganda Christian University, Gulu University and Kyambogo University. Through these student-led structure, IHB will reach an estimated 17,000 female university students in 2021 with information and services on birth control and safe abortion, including through the self-care initiative.

Building on the established collaboration

Building on the established collaboration with the aforementioned 8 university youth structures, IHB is continuing to mobilize and create similar structures in more university and other tertiary institutions of learning, with a target of reaching 10 more institutions by the end of 2021.

Navigating the hard-to-reach communities – the Islands

Through a collaboration with Kalangala District Local Government, IHB is conducting quarterly outreaches for integrated SRHR services in the communities of the lake Victoria island district of Kalanga, one of the hardest-to-reach and least served districts in Uganda. IHB is mobilizing partnerships and resources to implement a sustained FP/SA intervention in the island communities.

Making the ‘moon light’ safe

Working with the Association of Women Advocating for Change (AWAC), a female sex workers’ network, IHB has mapped and created direct links with 35 groups of female sex workers in 28 districts in Uganda. Though these groups, IHB is able to reach at least 2,450 female sex workers with SRHR information and services, especially STI/HIV services, birth control, safe and post abortion services, and cervical cancer screening. These groups will also be a channel for scaling up self-care for short-term contraceptives as well as medical abortion.
